Uganda has arrested an author and activist and a Television set journalist for allegedly cyber stalking the country’s President, Yoweri Museveni.
Author Norman Tumuhimbise and his colleague Farida Bikobere were reportedly bundled into a van by armed security personnel past 7 days. The pair’s law firm, Eron Kiiza, confirmed their arrest on Thursday to the news company Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Tumuhimbise is writer of the 2015 ebook, Unsowing the Mustard Seed, in which he offers a firsthand account of his kidnap and torture by brokers of Museveni, who has ruled Uganda because 1986.
The 36-yr-outdated creator, who prospects community pressure group The Substitute Motion and operates on the web media system Choice Digitalk Tv set where Bikobere is employed, was arrested forward of the planned March 30 publication of a new e book in which he criticizes Museveni.
“Norman Tumuhimbise and his colleague, Farida Bikobere, who is effective with him at Digitalk Tv, were billed with cyber stalking the president,” Kiiza explained to AFP.
He included: “The two denied the expenses and ended up remanded to Luzira jail right up until March 21.”
Kiiza alleged that telephones, laptops, cameras and audio recording machines belonging to Digitalk Tv were confiscated by Ugandan law enforcement.
The journalist and writer have been arrested on March 10 alongside with seven other journalists in the course of a raid on the places of work of Digitalk Tv. All were being charged with offensive conversation.
Whilst Tumuhimbise and Bikobere stay in detention in a most-security facility in Kampala, the 7 other persons were produced on police bond on March 15 and 16.
Describing how his customers had been addressed by their captors, Kiiza mentioned: “Both have been tortured like the other journalists with whom they were being arrested.”
If convicted, Tumuhimbise and Bikobere could be sentenced to up to a 12 months in jail and/or issue a fine under Uganda’s Pc Misuse Act.
In court documents found by AFP, prosecutors accuse Tumuhimbise and Bikobere of working with Option Digitalk Tv to unfold “offensive conversation… directed against the person of the President of Uganda”.
The arrest of Tumuhimbise will come after the detention of award-profitable Ugandan creator Kakwenza Rukirabashaija who was billed with insulting the President and his son on social media. Past thirty day period, Rukirabashaija traveled to Germany to find professional medical procedure after allegedly possessing been tortured during his detention.
