NASA isn’t really just interested in placing a lot more ladies in room. The agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has appointed Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s Dr. Laurie Leshin as its initial female director. She’ll presume the function on May perhaps 16th, changing previous director Michael Watkins (who retired in August 2021) and interim director Lt. Gen Larry James. She’ll also serve as vice president of Caltech, which manages the JPL.
Leshin has in depth experience, each in science and in breaking new floor. She has held senior positions in NASA, which includes a vital director role at the Goddard Room Flight Centre. As deputy associate administrator for NASA’s Exploration Programs Mission Directorate, she laid some of the groundwork for both of those business spaceflight and Artemis. She was Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s science dean, and has served as WPI’s initially woman president considering the fact that 2014.
The incoming JPL director has also pursued science of her personal. She has been a proponent of and contributor to Mars sample return missions, and aided examine information from the Curiosity rover. The appointment is also a return of kinds of Leshin, as she attained her graduate degrees at Caltech.
Caltech reported Leshin was a primary applicant to lead the JPL many thanks to her “strategic strategy” to science and technology, recognition of NASA’s primary part in science, navigation of elaborate institutions and skill to “inspire the next generation” of scientists and engineers.
