Russian Duo Indicted Over E-Book Piracy

A Russian few have been indicted for allegedly functioning just one of the world’s greatest e-e book piracy sites.

Anton Napolsky, 33, and Valeriia Ermakova, 27, each of St Petersburg, were arrested on November 3 in Cordoba, Argentina at the request of the US authorities, according to the Office of Justice (DoJ).

It is claimed they ran Z-Library – the self-styled “world’s major library,” that contains 11 million e-textbooks for down load.

On line since 2009, the website presented e-publications in different file formats stripped of copyright protections, in violation of US law. It also encouraged users to upload their personal titles.

In accordance to court files, the Z-Library also operated a sophisticated network of 249 joined web domains, all of which have now been taken offline and seized by the US authorities. 

“The defendants are alleged to have operated a site for above a 10 years whose central goal was providing stolen intellectual residence, in violation of copyright laws,” stated FBI assistant director-in-demand, Michael Driscoll.

“Intellectual residence theft crimes deprive their victims of each ingenuity and tough-acquired earnings. The FBI is determined to ensure people prepared to steal and financial gain from the creativity of many others are stopped and made to confront the penalties in the criminal justice technique.”

The Russian duo have been billed not only with felony copyright infringement, but also wire fraud and cash laundering, which can have prolonged sentences in the US.

“The defendants profited illegally off work they stole, usually uploading functions inside mere hrs of publication, and in the process victimized authors, publishers and booksellers,” reported US legal professional Breon Peace.

“This workplace is dedicated to safeguarding the mental house rights that permit inventive and inventive expression, and holding men and women accountable for threatening people rights.”
