A prolific Chinese spy who experimented with to steal secrets from US aviation providers has been jailed for 20 many years, in a 1st for the Office of Justice (DoJ).
Yanjun Xu, 42, rose to develop into deputy division director at the Ministry of Condition Security (MSS) intelligence agency. However, he was arrested in Belgium in 2018 soon after currently being lured there by an FBI agent posing as a GE Aviation staff that Xu was cultivating to offer Beijing with information.
Xu was the initially ever Chinese intelligence officer to be extradited to the US, in accordance to the DoJ.
The MSS spy reportedly performed a critical position in a subtle, multi-12 months plot to steal trade tricks from western aerospace firms that assisted the country create its C919 business airliner, amongst other points.
Xu used aliases, entrance providers and universities to trick aviation staff and solicit facts, at times recruiting them to journey to China less than the guise of giving a presentation at a university, which they ended up compensated for.
He also worked with colleagues to hack the computers of GE Aviation staff members in their lodge rooms whilst other MSS officials took the staffers out to meal, according to the DoJ.
In addition, Xu recruited insiders at a French aircraft engine manufacturer’s plant in China who were being inclined to spy for Beijing, and planted malware on the laptop of a French executive who usually travelled to the facility.
Xu also directed Chaoqun Ji, who entered the US on an F-1 college student visa, to recruit individuals in the US. In 2016 Ji was authorized to sign up for the US military and seemingly said his plan was to get leading security clearance. He was convicted in 2022.
“This circumstance is just the most recent case in point of the Chinese government’s ongoing attacks on American economic security – and, by extension, our nationwide security” explained FBI director Christopher Wray.
“The Chinese government tasked an officer of its spy provider to steal US trade secrets and techniques so it could progress its possess business and armed forces aviation efforts, at the cost of an American enterprise. This brazen action demonstrates that the Chinese governing administration will cease at almost nothing to set our firms out of business to the detriment of US personnel.”
A federal jury in Cincinnati convicted Xu on all counts: conspiracy to commit financial espionage, conspiracy to dedicate trade secret theft, tried financial espionage and attempted trade secret theft.
